Imperfect but acceptable boat with an unpleasant final surprise  
The Istion charter company staff were friendly and efficient at check-in. During use the boat showed problems with the toilet drains that made usage somewhat cumbersome; the batteries were exhausted and held charge only two or three hours even when kept on 220V shore power all night, the locker catches were defective as on many other Hansas and failed while sailing close-hauled repeatedly dropping the contents. Overall however the vessel proved adequate for the navigation we undertook. The 3-star rating is due to the final surprise. On 26/05/2026 sailing in the waters off Serifos, the structural failure of the rudder pintles occurred on the second sister ship we were sailing with, the Hanse 458 "C-Ya"; as is evident from the attached photos a pintle obviously worn broke—a damage caused by inadequate maintenance. We are sailing instructors for decades and were able to manage the situation and, although we were upwind of the coast and the boat initially yawed noticeably, we returned to Serifos port. We contacted the Lavrion base manager who informed us of spare pintles on board (I'll leave every assessment of this fact to the reader) and arranged the local technician who, not without some difficulty, solved the problem. We lost a day and paid for the port for the unexpected stop. Those who go to sea know that inconveniences of this kind can happen—the spare rudder is there for that too. What should not happen is the attempt at boat return to make the skipper colleague of C-Ya sign an assumption of liability. Base manager Giannis Tsirigotis was immovable and only thanks to my firm intervention did he put me in contact with his boss, a lady who presented herself as Istion's "charter manager", who after repeating that their first interest is safety (thank goodness—otherwise instead of the rudder half the hull would have broken...), agreed not to demand assumption of liability from the C-Ya skipper and promised me a thorough investigation of the incident whose results she would inform me of. To date I have received no information. I manage a small sailing school with 4 cabin boats and some support craft, and when units have had problems I have offered drinks to course students and given them a voucher for the full value of the course even when the fault was resolved in a single day. But above all I apologised, without trying to shift responsibility for the damage onto them. In short, a disgrace that compromised trust in Istion charter; we'll see if they can make amends. PS: I found it unpleasant that the base manager made us leave feedback for Istion before informing us of the clumsy attempt to shift the blame onto us.

A FULL HOUSE OF... ISLANDS!  
A splendid week among the four pearls west of Rhodes! Symi, Alimia, Chalki and Tilos. Azure and clear bays, lively and colourful villages, snorkelling, sailing and dinners on the beach! Excellent service, boat and organization by owner Istion! The fifth pearl was skipper Kristi: very kind and professional, discreet and pleasant, a mine of tips and activities! Thank you!
