Steering wheel broken on day 4, autopilot never worked  
Disclaimer: I absolutely do not recommend this charter company, which provides no technical assistance under any circumstances, not even in serious ones. After 3 hours of sailing on the first day, the autopilot shut down; we reported it to the base manager, who replied "come back to port." Obviously we continued on our route — we were almost at our anchorage. We had chosen early check-in, so going back to port would have made no sense! We expected someone to reach us at most the next morning by dinghy, but nothing. On the fourth day something really serious happened: after 7 hours of sailing we had reached the north bay of Lastovo and were about to drop anchor when the steering wheel suddenly started spinning freely. The bolts on the chain's lower textile section had come loose, falling completely to the bottom of the aft locker under the helm station. Fixing them on the spot was impossible, so we moored (steering with a tiller bar) alongside an anchored boat. We called the charter company, which replied: "try to fix it yourselves; meanwhile I'll see if I can find a mechanic." In an hour and a half of work we repaired and retensioned the chain on the wheel sprockets, with makeshift tools and great skill on the part of my crew. If it had happened with sails up or in heavy seas, it would have been much harder. The charter company did not send any technician to inspect it, nor did they apologize for what happened, saying IT CAN HAPPEN. Once the steering issue was closed, in the following days we asked several times to be reached by a technician to at least fix the autopilot, offering two days' availability ashore in a marina. Yet the charter company still gave us no assistance. I strongly advise against this charter company, which provides no technical support at all. A shame about the boat — it was comfortable. Not strong under sail, like all charter boats with in-mast mainsail furling and a very small jib. For clarity: I've been boating for 28 years (out of 32), sailed all over the Mediterranean in all weather conditions, commanded both private and charter vessels, and nothing like this had ever happened to me. The charter company was lucky it was us on board in that situation. If there had even been a family with small children, we'd have made the newspapers. We're a crew of people aged 25 to 35, so our love of boating and summer wasn't changed by that episode — rather, it's one of those things sailors know they'll be telling all their sailing friends about for the next year. The charter company definitely lost a client who could potentially have chartered 50-footers every summer. Dear Beatrice

Thank you for your review, but we feel we must respond and express our surprise and dissatisfaction with the above.

Regarding the autopilot – it is true that shortly after departure you reported that it was not working, even though it had worked without any problems at check-in. You were not far from our base, but you did not want to return. For us it is impossible to leave the base on a Saturday and carry out repairs on boats that are already out, simply because the workload at the base is too great. We located and arranged assistance from the authorised service to repair the autopilot, which was only a few miles away from you, but once again you did not want to change your itinerary.
It is also true that the chain came off the rudder mechanism. These things happen, even on new boats and models. We must admit that your experience helped prevent more serious damage, and for that we can sincerely thank you. But accusing us of what happened, or saying that we did not react and offer assistance, is nothing other than harmful.
Immediately after your call we began organising assistance. At that time you were on the island of Lastovo, the most remote inhabited island from the mainland, more than 150 miles from our base. If you think that place can be reached at any time within a few minutes or hours, then you are mistaken.
We arranged a boat at the location closest to your position, and our technicians were already on their way to that boat when you reported that the problem had been resolved.
The fact is that at no point were you left without our support, and on every one of your calls we answered and reacted.
We would also like to point out that you gave us excellent ratings on our post-charter questionnaire, and we do not understand what has changed in the meantime.

We have more than 20 years of experience in this sector, and our priority has always been care for our guests and boats. Otherwise, we would not have survived in this business for so long, with many clients returning to us and not wanting to charter a boat elsewhere.

Thank you again for being our guests, and thank you for your review, which however is neither honest nor even true.
