Cuba last chance

Most likely, this was the last opportunity to experience Cuba as we know it. With the embargo still in place and the economic situation deteriorating, everyday life is becoming increasingly difficult. Even the supply of basic necessities seemed to become more challenging day by day, and the situation continues to worsen. That said, the boat was in very good condition, the tanks were filled, and we were able to explore Cuba’s Cayos without any issues.

Cape Verde passage

In December we spent a week sailing around Sal, São Nicolau and Boa Vista. We picked up the boat in Sal. These are islands with very few protected anchorages and virtually no nautical facilities. The company provided contacts on São Nicolau and Boa Vista; we were able to moor on a buoy and go ashore to visit the islands. The boat had new sails and gave no problems. It's well maintained and the company works very well. We had good wind and enjoyed the passage very much.

Wonderful!

First time chartering in Mallorca and with an inexperienced crew we only moved in the southern area. Fundamentally an interesting area with limited anchoring options, as only sand bottom may be used (anchoring in seagrass can be penalised). Also many beautiful bays are generously 'cordoned off' with swimming areas, which often leaves space for only a few yachts; first come, first served, so naturally not so crowded! Happy to return to Mallorca, but then for longer and all the way around!

Great service despite the boat being a bit old

The service at Alboran was excellent, the shore crew is very helpful and check-in very streamlined. Everything went well but the boat (Grappa) from 2018 showed its 7 years of charter; heavily used and worn, with common areas not maintained in the best way. Beyond that, I would gladly sail again with Alboran. Mallorca proved easy and pleasant to navigate although it's coastal navigation. Options for anchoring are many and really good, with lots of beautiful coves. Finding a marina is harder, both because it was high season (July 2025) and because marinas are not very cooperative. Special mention for Marina Cala d'Or, very professional staff and lovely location.

Yacht not prepared

The handover of the yacht was not prepared. The centrifugal pump (pump in the saloon) did not work and was only repaired late on Sunday. However, after one day it was not working again. The owner could not be reached by phone, and returning the yacht took a very long time.

Recent boat but heavily used. At check-in a few things were missing such as the portolano, a pot or two, and some items were not where indicated, so it took us a while to find them. We had requested the safety net which we expected to be already fitted, but they were installing it when we arrived, causing some inconvenience during check-in and provisioning. Otherwise staff helpful and efficient.

Nice one week Tenerife-La Gomera-La Palma

Yacht was in very good condition, better than we expected from ten years old charter boat. Was equipped with big B&G chart plotter, Raymarine Autopilot and instruments. Engine was in perfect condition, working absolutely perfect. Sails were OK, reefing system was perfect (very important on Canary Islands) The only remark we have was usage of very aggressive cleaning agents (assume the chlorine stuff) for cleaning the toilets. For the first day was hard to even breath in toilet :-( But I assume that was related to the COVID-19 situation. In general I highly recommend this broker / charter companies.

Overall I'd say good, a few problems with the boat. The boat's condition although somewhat old was good, but 2 problems left us somewhat disappointed: 1) it had a problem with a portlight that was only repaired late on the evening of Saturday 7 August, not allowing us to depart immediately. 2) The 2 forward cabins, which on paper are advertised as triples, are extremely uncomfortable for 2, let alone for 3...we had no small discomfort sleeping.

The boat was fine, but there was a problem with the briefing on the risks should you encounter whales. Nobody pointed out to us that there would be very heavy penalties if you get too close to whales. Neither in the contract nor on board the boat were there any hints or warnings in this regard, and now we have a fine hanging over us because we were apparently too close to the whales. The charter company should definitely have told us about this beforehand, but unfortunately that was not the case.

A shame about the welcome

There was a cost discrepancy between the voucher agreed with Marenauta and the actual charge. When I asked why, the boat owner (that's how she introduced herself) replied that it was my problem with the agency, end of story. Note that they charged 5 euros per person for cockpit seat cushions. Never happened in 15 years of boating. And they were hideous!! Otherwise the boat was good, although very well used.

Perfect organization

The charter company proved organized and efficient; check-in was handled by very kind and helpful Italian staff. During the voyage we had a mechanical breakdown — the alternator belt snapped — and the contact provided by Marenauta was quick and arranged for a mechanic to come within a short time. Definitely a very serious company. The only criticism I have to make concerns a missed weather warning. Even though we used industry apps for wind and sea state (no names), and more than one weather service, no one warned us about an approaching storm.

Mallorca from the water is a special experience. Palma marina is centrally located and has everything you need. Since the harbours are quite busy in summer, we mostly anchored in the bays. The Elan 434 was well maintained for its age and is a very safe boat even in somewhat stronger wind.

Bring some skills to Cuba

Fantastic Bareboat charter. My crew of 4 and i have now all disembarked and returned to our various homes and tasks in western Canada after our 7 day Eastwards Bareboat charter from Ceinfuegos Cuba. We left the dock at the Yachtcharter Base which is at the very beautiful and historic Club Ceinfuegos on the south coast of Cuba and motored the 2005 Lavezzi 40 Cat through the deep and well marked channel and out of the harbor. Quickly after plotting for our first destination which for most boats in the fleet here would need to be the lighthouse at Cayo Guano del Este. (Bareboat Charters here are restricted to daylight hours due to the many reefs) i turned to look at the quickly diminishing coastline and realized how little elevation this island Nation has which is not a problem unless you have 4 people trying to get a visual fix in the daytime on a lighthouse 48 miles out perched on a rock of about 10 feet elevation the size of a few football fields.I put my faith in my new friend the B and G plotter at the helm and seven hours later it proved itself to me and from then on with just a bit of awareness of the deviation between what was showing on the Instrument and what i was actually seeing we got along fine. As usual the instruments accuracy is what i refer to as Dummied Down a bit,Something about National security i presume. It seemed to be off by about 25 Meters which is close enough but requires lots of vigilance from any available crew when spotting one of the many reefs to snorkel or dive that we encountered. Our boat included another plotter at the navigation station which was Galaxy tablet based however it was off about the same in the other direction.The electronic charts were great and in these Cuban waters show lots of reefs and rocks but it is easy to stay away from these obstacles unless and until you need to be in those areas then just keep watch and all will be well in your world. It was a bit choppy at anchor overnight there so early in morning we went the 8 nautical miles to Cayo Sol which we hoped and in fact was calmer and cooked breakfast before we left for Cayo Largo which is 28 nm east from there. We arrived before dusk and called the Harbourmaster for clearance onto the dock and into the Cayos (keys) which is a requirement when entering and leaving the Cayos. Cayo Largo is quite nice and you can get water dockside and minimal supplies can be found at the one small store there. Be sure to provision according to your requirements prior to departing Ceinfuegos as truly there isnt much available anywhere in the keys. We stayed an extra day and spent New years eve in Key Largo and had quite a good time there. The next day we just sailed around and went snorkeling ect but stayed at anchor near the harbour that night. The next day we beached the bows of onto the lee side of a sandy shore and set the anchor into the beach and spent that day exploring the beach which is quite safe since the twice daily tides there are at only about 1.5 feet,the winds stay constant where they are and the beach is steep enough to ensure the important parts like the rudders and saildrives stay wet. One of our only two issues was our Dinghy engine was very problematic and would only run reliably when tied to the stern of the boat so i had to swim for almost an hour into the wind and tow it back to the catamaran twice during the week. I did call the charter master who quickly sent a skipper and engineer from another yacht they were operating in the keys to perform some maintenance on the dinghy and while they were there i had them check the belts of the two Yanmar diesels which were crazy loose and the adjustment bolts were rounded off presumably caused by previous charterers using the wrong size wrenches as the tools supplied did not have the correct wrenches for the task nor did it include a vice grips or an adjustable Cresent wrench. The engineer that came to assist did manage to round the bolt off a bit more on the starboard engine and get the belt a bit tighter but he advised the port engine was sufficiently adjusted and performed no maintenance to that side. Normally i would not complain but since i was able to spin both the alternator and water pump pulleys on both engines with the belts on i knew they were to loose... On our return to Ceinfuegos the Port belt shredded and came off causing an overheat complete with the shutdown of that engine and i anticipated some additional concerns docking without it but all went well and after i texted the chartermaster he had staff dockside to assist. All things considered i am always up for a few mechanical challenges. It was a great adventure and i was glad to be fortunate enough to do it As always i am ready to seek out the next destination and when i consider where to charter a 14 year old boat i will remember that it is very difficult to get the proper replacements or any replacement parts in Cuba and may look to book a newer boat on my next charter.

Beautiful area for sailing

The boat was an Fountaine Pajot 46 catamaran from 2006 and we were happy with it. The sails were excellent and brand new. The heads worked perfectly, as did the galley and oven. Boat cleanliness was questionable. Engine fuel consumption was very low. Excellent performance in wind and sea. The electric winch failed after two days. The Balearics are beautiful, with lovely anchorages for overnight stays and many excellent restaurants. In general there are many other boats around, but it is peak holiday season... Visits to Palma and Ibiza were very interesting, especially for their historical value and monument upkeep. Watch out for jellyfish! Remember that the Alboran base answers on VHF channel 8 and they are very friendly and professional. Marenauta, as always, delivers a very high level of service and support! Thank you all for the wonderful days.

Fantastic place, but the boat was pathetic

I would certainly not recommend this charter company, as I found unprofessional and very slipshod people who gave us incorrect information about places and navigation restrictions. The boat (Elan 434, 2008) was very dirty and in a state fit for the scrapyard. The rudder had 20 cm of play, the autopilot gave up after one day, the portlights were not watertight and let water in, and the general condition was poor. On the plus side, Formentera is a dream destination, and with hindsight it would have been better to stay one more day. The wind was constant, almost every day from 10 to 15 knots — not very strong, but pleasant.

We are really sorry that the client was not satisfied with the boat. If in his opinion the boat was not clean enough or he was not satisfied with it, he could had mentioned this the day of check in, as now we cannot check what exactly was wrong. If the client tells us at embarkment that the yacht is dirty we may send again cleaning staff so they could clean it again for them.

About the pilot: we do not know what happened, but it has been functioning till now.

Ref. hatched: we really appreciate the comment, perhaps if the client had made it at check out we could had checked before the next charter where the water was entering through, this was the other client would not have the same problem. When the boat is back at the base we will ask the actual client if he was having similar problem.

So that the client stays satisfied, if he wishes to we may offer him 10% of special discount for his next charter with us at any of our bases, apart from the regular early booking (5 or 10% depending on the base he chooses) and 5% repeater.

When the clients where refilling the tanks and they noticed that there was entering too much diesel, they talked to the skipper, who was also the skipper during previous charter on this yacht. So the clients only paid 170CUC according to the use they made, and our company paid the difference of 121CUC. No one here had any intention cheat.

The vacation went well, but Alboran charter company is not the best. At check-in it's a good thing we checked the sails, as I found the mainsail completely torn. Because of this inconvenience we lost a day of sailing. We asked for a small refund, even symbolic, but manager Fernando sent us packing. Well, I've been renting boats in Croatia and Italy for 10 years and this never happened to me. Later, at return, I understood how such a thing could happen. Check-out consists of a series of questions and the operators who should physically inspect the boat didn't check. If you could send a warning letter to your operator that one doesn't behave this way, it would be useful for those who will still rent boats with Alboran. Anyway, we liked Tenerife and then we had fun.
