Unsafe Boat, Unfair Practices – A Cautionary Tale
|
|
Our charter with Sailing Sicily was one of the worst experiences we have ever had at sea. The boat delivered had serious and dangerous technical issues: the main engine was unreliable and the furling system failed during the trip. These are not minor inconveniences — they are safety hazards that should have been addressed before handing over the vessel.
Assistance was slow and dismissive, leaving us to manage stressful and unsafe situations on our own. Instead of taking responsibility, the company tried to pressure me into signing an unfair waiver in order to release my security deposit. When I refused to sign, they unjustifiably withheld €1,379 from my deposit without any proper documentation or legal basis.
This behaviour is unprofessional, unethical, and shows complete disregard for customer safety and rights. Sailing Sicily not only failed to deliver a seaworthy vessel, but also attempted to shift the consequences of their negligence onto their customers.
For anyone considering a charter with this company: think twice. There are many other operators who value safety, transparency, and fairness — Sailing Sicily is not one of them.

Would not recommend, charter from another company
|
|
This charter company is extremely sub-par. They are rude, ignore your questions at check out, charge you for everything (who pays for extra sheets and pillows on a week long charter?!?), and try to give you cheap version of what you need! Thank god we asked them to show us how to use the outboard motor, because guess what, the one we paid for and were given did not work. Also, our dinghy was inoperable (it would sink) with the 5 of us in it,(despite chartering a 4 cabin boat with a 10 person capacity). They told us we did not have an invertor on our boat. When I called them the next day to again ask about this, as we needed it to charge a passenger's sleep apnea machine, they had to call the boat owner to find out that we did indeed have one. Lastly, our boat had a ton of algae on the bottom, which really slowed it down. I would highly recommend NOT chartering from this broker.

The boat did not present any safety issues: it had been chartered with only positive feedback in the weeks before and after.
We cannot comment on the skipper's technical skills (although these must always be taken into account in charter agreements).
The boat did not present any safety issues. The engine “broken down” not only restarted without any problems, but when the following morning it was inspected by a mechanic, who confirmed that no repairs were required.
On the other hand, the vessel was handed over to the customer within a shorter time than contractually agreed.
The only real inconvenience experienced by the customer (for which we would not rule out holding him responsible) concerned a zip on the boat's bimini, which AFTER his first outing, was broken due to his repeated attempts to tighten it.
Furthermore, following both the rules of navigation and common sense, any responsible skipper would never use a vessel with serious maintenance issues for two weeks, putting himself and the crew at risk. In fact, the customer's claims appeared immediately unfounded and contrived.
Nevertheless, in our willing to maintain a commercial relationship with the customer and also to protect our relationship with the agency that referred him, we offered not to charge for the cost of the rubbish bags left on board (without mentioning the general state of cleanliness of the vessel) and the cost of an outboard motor broken by the customer.
To all of the above was added a voucher of 200 € for future holidays.
What was offered exceeded a value of 1500 €.
Before finalizing this commercial gesture, we asked him to sign a release protecting both parties from any future claims (us from the customer's demands and him for the damage he caused).
The customer having refused and having shown the willing to pursue legal action, we followed the normal procedure, namely retaining the security deposit as compensation for the damage he caused.
We note that to this day the carcass of the outboard motor he broke remains available for inspection and collection.
From theoutset we showed complete openness to resolve the matter quickly and fairly, forfeiting our right to reimbursement for damages, but we were left with no choice by the customer's decisions but to proceed as described
