The boat was perfectly clean, as confirmed by the customer at handover, but the GPS had operating problems due to the restricted zone because of military events; in fact many boats reported the same problems. In La Spezia we have the Marina Militare and these things can happen; the device was picking up satellites but not giving a position. I suggested using it differently but equally effectively for operations during a weekend in the Gulf, i.e. using it as a chart plotter and therefore for moorings and approach charts with equal functionality.
As for the windlass, if the engine is not kept at sufficient rpm and not exactly in line with the chain, it has some difficulty when retrieving the anchor; but in their case, having clearly explained how to use it, a very different problem occurred: they wrapped the chain around a steel beam that had nets and anchors tangled together, as explained by the diver who had to intervene. They most likely used the throttle lever frantically while trying to free themselves, and consequently it came loose from the sprocket it is screwed onto; as soon as I came on board with them present, tightening it with an Allen key was enough to fix it, and it is still perfectly functional now, but evidently in a moment of apprehension they incorrectly used it, tightening the sprocket with locking pliers thinking it was broken.
The customers also claimed that the port cabin door would not stay closed (..?) and after testing it repeatedly in their presence it showed nothing, and to this day I have had no complaints from subsequent guests or from myself.
These are the facts of that episode as I found and experienced them.
